This year’s regional finalist for the OSPI Classified Employee of the Year for the Olympic ESD 114 region is Richard Haskins from Central Kitsap School District. Mr. Haskins has been serving Central Kitsap High School as their Campus Security Officer for 14 years.
Last year, Mr. Haskins was also the Central Kitsap School District and Central Kitsap High School Classified Employee of the year. He had a long and distinguished career in the US Navy before moving to the public school system.
Joe Vlach, Assistant Principal at Central Kitsap High School, writes that Mr. Haskins (or “Big Rick”), has continued to improve his education past his years of training and experience as a corrections officer in the Navy. He graduated from the Military Police School in Fort McClellan, Alabama with Correctional Specialist training, and has not stopped taking classes, workshops and trainings to further his knowledge and experience.
Mr. Haskins leads staff in trainings such as on “Drugs, Guns, and Gangs in School.” Mr. Vlach writes, “Rick trains our staff with meaningful, engaging and prescient professional development.” He is dedicated to improving the security of the students and staff at the High School, ensuring a safe environment for education.
Mr. Haskins engages the students in proactive security measures, is certified in suicide intervention, and is trained in mediation. He has been a positive role model and confidante for both parents and students. Steve Coons, principal at Central Kitsap High School, writes, “I personally attribute much of the positive climate at CKHS directly to Rick’s work with students, staff and the community.”
Olympic ESD 114 is proud to have Richard Haskins as the Regional Classified Employee of the Year. His application has been forwarded on to OSPI for consideration for State Classified Employee of the Year. The recipient of this honor will be announced on Friday, April 19, 2013, at a ceremony at OSPI.
Good luck, Big Rick!
