Program Learning Walk: Spotlight on OESD’s Open Doors Program

Sign: Pathways to Success -- Open Doors

As part of a program learning walk series, on Thursday, December 11, 2025, OESD Superintendent Aaron Leavell, Workers’ Comp Director Nicole Roel, Executive Director of Integrated Learning Patricia Beuke, and Executive Assistant Tina Schulz had the privilege of visiting OESD’s Open Doors Program.

The group was welcomed by Jeff Allen, Director of Youth Services, and Julie Cook, Program Supervisor, who led a tour of the facility. During the visit, the group engaged with Brittany Dunklin, Enrollment Specialist, and Gail Stark, Open Doors Teacher, and observed Student Assistant Professional Hanatea Elkington engaging with students.

The visit provided insight into the program’s student population, services, daily and yearly schedules, curriculum materials, funding model, and goals for expansion. A notable moment was the presentation of Winter Solstice projects completed by students, accompanied by an explanation of the significance of participating in this reflective assignment.

The Open Doors Program is designed to create a safe and supportive environment for youth aged 16–21 who are behind in credits and seeking to re-engage in school. While enrolled, students focus on removing barriers, improving mental health, enhancing career readiness, and/or pursuing a GED.

Currently, the program serves 48 active students with a team of nine staff members. Since its inception on October 1, 2025, Open Doors has delivered outstanding services that exemplify OESD’s Mission, Vision, and Practices—creating connections, enriching education, and igniting possibilities.

The Open Doors team continues to make a significant impact by supporting students and helping them thrive.
