After nearly four decades of dedicated service, the OESD Science Kit Cooperative will officially close on June 30, 2025. Established in 1988, the Co-op has been a foundational resource for elementary science education across our region, delivering teacher-ready kits and hands-on learning materials that have inspired generations of young learners.
Over the years, the program has adapted to the evolving needs of our districts. Despite efforts to sustain the service—including a pilot transition program this year—declining district participation and increasing financial subsidies from our Teaching and Learning Department ultimately made the model unsustainable. The recommendation to close the Science Kit Center was presented to the OESD Board of Directors on January 16, 2025.
On May 30, 2025, we hosted a Science Kit Co-op Celebration to honor the program’s legacy and the staff who brought it to life. We extend heartfelt thanks to Sarah Freitas, Cassy Gran, Marta Bright, and Tara Orcutt.
We also recognize Jeff Ryan, OESD Science Coordinator, who shared the history and impact of the Co-op during the event (see slides below). Staff from across departments and regional school district leaders gathered for a short program and refreshments.
To our Science Kit team: thank you for your countless hours of service, for delivering professional learning, and for ensuring every kit was classroom-ready. Your work has consistently earned high praise and has truly made an impact.
While the Science Kit Cooperative is coming to a close, our commitment to high-quality elementary science education continues through ongoing professional learning and instructional support.
We are proud of this legacy—and even prouder of the people behind it.
